SANDAKAN FREEDOM by John Lewis

The history of a sad, dark age is told through stories on the page on Sandakan. Stories of people shine in the light of courage through endless day and night. Men who were brought here to slave and die gave their all and continue to defy. Those who lived here bravely joined the fight, conquered fear to defend freedom's light. Then came a day when the fight was won. The cruelty, pain and dying done. War had been won by the living and dead. Freedom and joy had replaced fear and dread. Now we the keepers of the flame and we must send word of their flame. So we will tell of those years long ago when heroes won the freedom we know in Sandakan.
