THE NORTH BORNEO HERALD
AND
THE OFFICIAL GAZETTE
EDUCATIONAL SERIES BY BORNEO HISTORY
No. 1. - VOL.1. KUDAT, THURSDAY, 1st MARCH, 1883.
The North Borneo Herald.
THURSDAY, 1st MARCH, 1883
EDITOR'S NOTICE.
THE NORTH BORNEO HERALD AND OFFICIAL
GAZETTE will at first be Issued from time to time as opportunity present itself
and matter for publication accumulates, but it is hoped that the encouragement
of subscribers will soon enable us to strengthen our editorial and printing
staff, when we shall endeavour to produce a number monthly, at least. As will
be seen by the notification published in our columns, the paper is to be the
Official Organ of the Government, and it will also contain, besides local news,
information as to the progress of planting and other industries in the country,
reports on exploration and scientific prospecting, notes on natural history,
and every kind of information likely to be valuable to those who take an
interest in the country, whether at home or abroad. For a supply of such matter
we have only our local subscribers to look to. We trust also that our paper will
be made use of for purposes of discussion on subjects connected with the development
of the country, to which our columns will always be open. The Editor feels that
apology is unnecessary for this, the first attempt at journalism in North
Borneo, as the public will recognize the difficulties which present themselves
in the commencement of Such an undertaking, especially when the labour of
collecting and editing material is a voluntary one, and can only be carried on
in the intervals of other pressing business. When the support of the public is
sufficient to attract a professional Editor to the work the paper will be a
fair subject for criticism. Until then
we will do our best, and crave indulgence for shortcomings.
